Title: | The inside of a fur processing factory |
Description: | Provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), this historic image, shot within a Connecticut fur processing plant, depicted the inside of the plant's blower room. Data accompanying the image said that the ventilation inside this sector was 'off'. In such a processing plant, ventilation is crucial to the health and wellbeing of the employees, for mercury nitrate is used in the manufacturing of animal furs, in what is known as 'carroting'. Inhalation of vapors expelled during the evaporation of this chemical can lead to mercury poisoning, or 'mercurialism', causing pathologic neurological illness. |
